Avocado Seed

We have been eating guacamole every night and I wanted to make use of the avocado seeds. So, I decided to plant them....in soil (It was late and I didn't want to turn on my computer and search how to plant an avocado seed). The way you're supposed to do it is like this:

Edible Tropicals knows the real deal

But I had no toothpicks and was too lazy to go get it, so I made my own device out of water bottles.
I turned the bottle around and rested the seed on the mouthpiece and ta-da! it actually works. However, I'm not sure if you're suppose to actually poke it to make it sprout, so all you experts, let me know!

  1. It may be easier than you think. My mother used to have a planter that ran along one wall of our dining room. She ended up with several avocado plants, just from kids sitting the seeds in the soil.

  4. I've done this a few times but never managed to maintain it to the point of getting an actual tree (I don't live in a climate where avocados grow anyway) but as far as I know it is best to score an X into the bottom of the part sitting in the water

I like your recycling idea - but I'm curious where the 'sprout' will grow if the seed is not elevated with room in the water below it?
